The challenge is that there isn't much in the way of training for Visual Practitioners.

Then there are books about learning, thinking styles and the the artists thought process.

The following books talk about cartoon art or are great examples of data display

Go back to the top
There are some good books on the use of graphical data written by a Yale professor of graphical design and statistics (two subjects that don't normally overlap) by the name of Ed Tuffte

Mr Tufte operates his own publishing house: Graphic Press Box 430 Cheshire Connecticut 06410 USA

Visual Display book cover The Visual Display of Quantitative Information
Mr. Tuffte takes on the notion of manipulating the reader and the critical need for honest presentation-in the graphical arena. He proposes the notion of the "multivariate" nature of reality, stating that we can't present our data out of context with the rest of reality or in these small snippets - typical of a financial bar chart or statistica chart.
I have to say that I agree with him from both the ethical perspective as well as my own experience. The more of this work I do-the larger my client list become.
Mr. Tufte characterized this book as "pictures of numbers".
Envisioning Information bookcover Envisioning Information
This book is about discovery. One of the premises is that new knowldege can be found as a result of proper graphical display. Examples include, Gallileo, and the Space Shuttle Challenger.
Mr. Tufte characterized this book as "pictures of nouns".
Visual Explanations BookCover Visual Explanations:
While I don't have a copy of this one, I understand it to be about "stuff in motion", and more information about how to help the viewer clearly understand dynamic facts and data.
Mr. Tufte characterized this book as "pictures of verbs".

Disney Animation: The illusion of life
Hardcover - 575 pages Revised edition
Copyright(October 1995) Hyperion;
ISBN: 0786860707

This book is a "recreation" of the classic 1986 edition, as the original art and negatives for this book were lost.

This is the ultimate "visual language" book, as it illustrates how Disney and crew "discovered" how to put across in the "new" film medium all of the ancient "tricks" used in theater for the last 2000 years. Known as the animators bible, there is no better source for information about visual expression.

The Change Wars

The change wars ARE (for me at least) the reason why I see the importance of linking in the artist's thinking/seeing processes. When change is approached in the traditional way (bulldozer approach), then no one but the instigators has reason to support or sustain the change, much less help it happen.
